Smart Mobility in Turin: 24 Sinelec-branded Roadside Units are now operational

The technological evolution of Turin’s urban node continues where SINELEC, technological partner of 5T—the company that designs, builds and manages mobility systems and services—completed the installation and activation of 24 Roadside Units (RSUs), the technology poles equipped with devices that enable bidirectional vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.

The initiative is part of the Living Lab ToMove project which enables new functionalities for the testing of cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) and allows innovative technologies to be trialed under real-world conditions on the streets of the Piedmont capital.

The new RSUs stand out for their technological flexibility, as they feature dual active radio capability supporting both the ITS-G5 and C-V2X standards simultaneously. On the one hand, the RSUs can receive real-time information from connected vehicles; on the other, they can exchange messages related to road safety and traffic management.

The “brain” of the system is the Emeras platform, entirely developed in-house by Sinelec. The software modules provided manage RSU diagnostics and the bidirectional, real-time dissemination of messages, enabling operators to visualize events on a map, monitor traffic flows and automate the delivery of information to drivers.

A concrete application of this technology is the AutoMove pilot, the autonomous shuttle of the ToMove project. Thanks to Emeras, the shuttle can communicate with the urban infrastructure, obtaining real-time information on traffic light status and their timing. This integration allows the autonomous vehicle to adjust its speed when approaching intersections, ensuring smooth and safe navigation.
