Stop the risk of wrong-way driving! Technology for safety

Road safety knows no calendar. Although heavy summer traffic peaks turn on a spotlight on motorways, protecting travelers is a constant commitment for the ASTM Group and Sinelec, Group’s technological arm. Wrong-way driving entering and traveling on a carriageway in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic is among the most dangerous behaviors a driver can engage in. To mitigate this risk, ASTM is rolling out an installation plan for automatic wrong-way detection systems developed by Sinelec.

These devices permanently monitor areas most prone to driver distraction, such as certain types of junctions and service station ramps. The system provides real-time surveillance using latest-generation smart cameras which can also be combined with radar sensors. If a vehicle accidentally enters a ramp in the wrong direction, on-site visual indicators, sometimes integrated with acoustic devices, activate immediately to instantly alert the driver and prompt him to stop.

At the same time, the anomaly alert is transmitted to the relevant Traffic Control Center, where specialized operators can immediately initiate emergency procedures. In fact, these wrong-way detection systems are fully integrated into SINCRO, Sinelec’s ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management System) platform.

This dedicated wrong-way technology is already a growing reality across the Italian motorway network managed by the Group. For instance, the installation of 27 monitoring points has just been completed on the A21 Piacenza-Brescia, while the first pilot systems are already operational on the A4 Torino-Milano, with 22 additional systems set to follow.
